Namibia 4x4 Rentals FAQs

Do I need a 4x4 to travel through Namibia?

Not every road in Namibia requires four-wheel drive, but a high-clearance 4x4 is highly recommended for a self-drive holiday. Many of Namibia’s attractions are reached via gravel roads, sand, rough tracks and remote areas. A 4x4 gives you greater comfort, clearance and flexibility, particularly when travelling beyond the main tourist routes.

What is the minimum age to rent a vehicle from Go Rent?

The minimum driver age is 23 years. Drivers must have held a valid driver’s licence for at least one year. Additional charges apply to drivers under 25 or over 65 years of age.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

Yes. Foreign renters must present their valid original driver’s licence together with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP). Copies or photographs of licences are not accepted.

Can more than one person drive the rental vehicle?

Yes. Additional drivers may be added to the rental agreement for a once-off fee of N$280 per driver. Every driver must meet the licence and age requirements and must be registered on the rental agreement before driving the vehicle.

What insurance options are available?

Go Rent offers three insurance options. Basic Cover is N$230 per day with a N$45,000 excess/deposit. Extended Cover is N$362 per day with a N$30,000 excess/deposit. Premium Cover is N$546 per day and provides zero excess on covered claims. Insurance exclusions and rental conditions still apply to all options.

Can I insure the tyres and windscreen?

Yes. Optional Windscreen & Tyre Cover is available for N$184 per day and covers one tyre and one windscreen per rental, subject to the rental terms and conditions. Rims are excluded.

Is camping equipment insured?

Camping equipment is not automatically covered by the vehicle insurance. Optional Camping Equipment Damage/Loss Cover is available for N$103.50 per day, subject to the applicable terms and exclusions.

What is included with a camping-equipped Hilux?

Our camping vehicles are prepared for independent travel in Namibia and include the essential camping equipment required for your journey. Depending on your booking, vehicles can be configured for 1–2 people or 3–4 people. Your quotation will clearly show the vehicle and camping configuration supplied.

What speed limits apply to Go Rent vehicles?

Go Rent contractual limits are a maximum of 60 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on gravel roads, 110 km/h on national tar roads and 40 km/h in national parks. Vehicles are GPS monitored. These limits form part of the rental and insurance conditions.

Can I take the vehicle into Botswana or South Africa?

Yes, cross-border travel may be permitted with prior written approval from Go Rent. Cross-border documentation, fees and additional deposits may apply depending on the country and your planned itinerary. Always advise us of your complete route before departure.

Can I travel to Zimbabwe, Zambia or other neighbouring countries?

Some cross-border routes have restrictions and require prior approval. Zimbabwe travel is limited to approved destinations and other countries may require special permission. Send us your proposed itinerary before booking so we can confirm whether the route is permitted.

Are there any roads or areas where I may not take the vehicle?

Yes. Certain remote, extreme or off-road areas are restricted or require written permission. These include selected routes in Namibia and Botswana, beaches, dunes and unmarked off-road tracks. Always discuss adventurous or remote routes with Go Rent before travelling.

Can I drive at night in Namibia?

We strongly recommend avoiding night driving, particularly outside towns. Wildlife, livestock, poor visibility and long remote stretches make night driving considerably more dangerous. Night driving in certain areas may also affect your insurance cover.

What happens if I have an accident?

Contact Go Rent immediately and obtain a police report within 24 hours. A police report is required for accidents and theft and is necessary for an insurance claim to be considered. Do not arrange towing or major repairs without authorisation from Go Rent.

What should I do if I get a puncture?

Contact Go Rent and let us know what has happened. Our vehicles are prepared for Namibia’s road conditions and include a spare tyre. If a tyre cannot be repaired, contact us before purchasing a replacement so that the correct specification can be arranged.

Do your vehicles have GPS tracking?

Yes. Go Rent vehicles are fitted with GPS tracking for vehicle location and speed monitoring. The system assists with safety, vehicle management and compliance with the rental conditions.

Can you arrange airport transfers?

Yes. We can arrange transfers between Hosea Kutako International Airport and our Windhoek office. Whether the transfer is included or charged separately depends on your booking package, and this will be clearly indicated on your quotation.

Where do I collect my rental vehicle?

Our Windhoek office is located at 6 Diehl Street, Southern Industrial Area. Other collection and drop-off locations can also be arranged, including selected destinations within Namibia and neighbouring countries. Additional one-way or delivery charges may apply.

How long does the vehicle handover take?

Allow sufficient time for a proper vehicle handover. Our team will inspect the vehicle with you and explain the 4x4 system, camping equipment, rooftop tent, tyre equipment and important driving and safety procedures before you depart.

Can you help me plan my Namibia self-drive route?

  We rented 2 fully camping equiped Toyota Highlux for a bit over two weeks in Dec 2024. Everything we needed including wi-fi were in the cars and we also got very quick feedback and solution to replace a malfunctioned fridge on one of the cars. Overall the Toyotas were in a good shape and we could enjoy our trip around Namibia. The double tank we had on one of the cars was both useful and appreciated in the more remote areas. The ride from the hotel to the airport a couple of days after we delivered the cars back was a nice gestaure. 😁👍 Actually we had such a good time and good experiance with the rental company we decided we have to come back and do the Nam - Botswana - Nam loop, and yes we will use Go Rent Namibia 4x4 Rentals again. 😁

 Verified Namibia round trip We rented the Toyota Hilux double cab for three and a half weeks and took it on a round trip. The car was in excellent condition, and we experienced no technical issues. It was equipped with everything necessary for a road trip. Robert and Christina were always available to answer any questions we had. When our flight was rescheduled, Simon quickly arranged a ride to the airport. Overall, a very dynamic, competent, and friendly team with top-notch vehicles.

 Verified Todo perfecto! El coche que hemos alquilado es magnífico! Estaba todo en muy buen estado, muy nuevo. Todos los accesorios necesarios estaban a nuestra disposición! No nos faltaba de nada y todo en muy buenas condiciones. El coche y las tiendas muy cómodas. Además éramos 5 personas y nos pusieron una tienda de camping extra para mayor comodidad. Robert ha estado atento en todo momento por si necesitábamos algo , nos preguntaba a menudo si todo estaba bien y nos mandaba vídeos explicativos con el uso de todo. también nos dieron una explicación en persona.   Fantastic! Robert is super helpful and very efficient. We chose our places to stay but he made all the bookings for us which removed the tedious administration. The vehicle was excellent and Robert threw in all sorts of extras - fridge, binoculars, table, chairs, gas cooker, cutler, pans etc. We had wi Fi in the vehicle. Unlike most people we had no Punctures and absolutely everything worked for the whole 2 week trip. Highly, highly recommend Robert and his team.

  Absolute 1000% recommendation for this rental company. The entire process couldn’t have been smoother. Robert was instrumental in helping us plan a doable itinerary, Simon was great when picking us up and explaining the car and Alicia was working to provide us with the necessary papers. They went above and beyond to provide an excellent experience including extra transfers, wifi, help with the itinerary and questions about the gear were addressed quickly over WhatsApp. The car had everything we needed and the rooftents provide exceptional space and comfort.  Verified Definitely recommended 😆 I don’t usually leave reviews on Google Maps or TripAdvisor, but I’m making an exception because the experience with Go Rent Namibia 4x4 Rentals was truly outstanding. We were a group of nine students and were warmly welcomed by Robert and Simon, who took great care of us from start to finish. The free airport transfer to our accommodation and the following day’s ride to the agency made things so smooth. Each car came with a Wi-Fi hotspot and a local SIM card. All the camping equipment was included: sleeping bags, pillows, utensils, lamps, chairs, tables, and more. Robert even added a tent, mattress, and extra bedding free of charge so that no one had to sleep in the car. Binoculars and walkie-talkies were also thoughtfully provided. Moreover, Robert reviewed our itinerary with us and gave valuable advice on places to visit. On the day of our return, we unfortunately hit a warthog. With very limited time before our flight, Robert was incredibly responsive, guided us through remote repair steps with video instructions, and ensured we didn’t miss our flight. The customer service was excellent throughout. I highly recommend this agency for its flexibility, kindness, and professionalism ☺️A special mention for international students: no extra charge for additional drivers and no strict delay required between license issuance and driving the vehicle, an agency that truly understands and supports young travelers.

  We rented a Hillux 4x4 from Robert and his team for our amazing two week Namibia trip. From booking to pickup at the airport, to explanation of the car, everything was professional and we felt well taken car of. We got a super clean, well maintained and rather new car, with tires in perfect conditions (not a single issue during our trip). With the car came a rooftop tent, not brand new, but in good conditions, perfectly clean and fitted clean bedsheets. As we were afraid of being cold they even gave us additional sleeping bags (that we didn’t need in the end). The car comes fully equipped with everything needed for a Namibian camping holiday. Camping table, chairs, cutlery, all sorts of pots and pans and most importantly everything for a great barbecue. Thanks to the good state of the car we didn’t have any issues during our trip. Nevertheless we knew that we could always reach out to Robert and the Go Rent Team for assistance which was great for peace of mind travelling in a new country. We really enjoyed travelling with this car and will definitely recommend this rental agency to our friends.

When checking-in make some room in your travel planning: they provide you with a great walkthrough of the car and will even help you with your route. That takes some time.  Verified Perfect car rent in Namibia Everything was perfect: -transfer from the airport -new car with the nice smell inside -all new camping equipment -practically new A/T tires But the most important thing is that owners of this car rent not only give you the car, but help to plan you root day by day in Namibia. All the lodges, which they recommended were excellent. P.S. I damaged the inside part of the rear right door and they haven't taken any money for that.

 Verified Efficient Reliable Fun The experience was excellent. As the first point of interaction with Namibia, the team set the tone for the whole trip. From the complimetary airport transfer, refreshments and orientation for the vehicle and road conditions, you are met with friendliness, courtesy and efficiency. The vehicle was fun and reliable, able to effectively deal with all the varying terrain we encountered. The camping equipment provided proved efficient. From basic spices to bedding, everything was carefully considered. Go Rent Namibia 4x4 Rentals made our visit special.  Verified Totally recommended Our experience with Go Rent Namibia has been great.The car, a massive Toyota Hilux, was all we needed for the challenging Namibian roads and has been our loyal friend for about 2300 kilometers, most of them spent on gravel or desert roads.   I had a great experience with Go Rent Namibia ! I rented a car for 3 weeks and was really satisfied with it. They provide all the tools and accessories necessary for camping and they stay in touch with you to provide assistance for anything during your travel time. I was kindly welcomed in their office and well briefed before my departure. Everyone was very kind ! The roof tent is also very confortable and quite easy to set up.  Verified 10/10 Highly recommend!!!! We had an incredible experience with Go Rent Namibia 4x4 Rentals. My colleagues and I were traveling for work and only had time for a very quick (2 night) last minute trip. Robert and his colleagues were so accommodating in letting us book only 2 days in advance. The vehicle had absolutely everything we needed for our short trip to Swakopmund. We were highly impressed with how thorough the team was in packing supplies for us. The wifi worked extremely well, and the tents were comfortable and large. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a camping experience who might have limited supplies/planning time!!!  Verified Nmibia and Botswana by 4x4 Firs class service from the company and prime car with everything and a little more you need for camping, driving, bush maintenance and recovery in case of the unforeseen... Since we included Botswana in our tour we were also equipped with sand ladders, excellent example of the attention to details by Go Rent Namibia 4x4. This was the second time we rented a fully camping equipped vehicle from the company - or third car if we count our friends rental of second car in the first trip. The airport transfer is also much appreciated - it's included if you go for a longer time. Not to mention all good tips and ideas we got from Robert and his team at the office discussing our route when picking up the car and in mail conversations prior to the trip. We had a fabulous ride through Namibia and Botswana. As a matter of fact it was so good we decided to go back in October 2026 for a third adventure - this time in the dry season. Based on our experience with Go Rent Namibia 4x4 our choice of rental company is easy. This time we book the Toyota Highlux for 32 days.

  Excellent car, fully equipped with all that we needed and more for our first but definitely not last trip to Namibia! Super great and friendly service from start to finish, Robert and Cristina always very quick to reply to any questions and also great tips from Robert on our travel itinerary. Overall 100% satisfied with the car, all the camping supplies and the service. The mattress in the tent was surprisingly very comfortable too.  Verified Superb service and quality Robert & Peter clearly know their stuff. I could not have wished for a better experience. The vehicle was in prime condition and their experience on what to kit it out with was invaluable and all came from their immaculate store room. The result was an amazing 16 day trip over some of the toughest roads on the world without a single puncture in the greatest comfort.   Go Rent Namibia - Unbelievable customer service. From our booking, we have been in contact with Christina who has responded to all our queries before reaching Namibia. Airport transfers were provided to us. Simon, a gentleman and his colleague came to take us at the airport. A clean reliable 4x4 Toyota was provided us. We met with Robert who is the owner of the company and who provided us with advices which have been of huge help during our trip. A full explanation of the do’s and don’ts by Robert and here we go!!!!! Recovery of the vehicle was scheduled for Tuesday evening but Robert proposed that we drove back to our hotel safely and necessary arrangements shall be made for recovery of the vehicle the next day. Thumb up !!!!! Should anyone need a vehicle in Namibia, Go Rent Namibia is the one you should look for, taking into consideration the level of customer service, peace of mind and prices.  Verified Absolut weiterzuempfehlen!! Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit der Autovermietung. Die Mitarbeiter sind super nett und auch vor Antritt der Reise funktionierte die Kommunikation per Mail super easy. Das Auto hat uns auf ganzer Linie überzeugt und wir haben uns während des gesamten Urlaubs sehr wohl gefühlt. Auch die Dachzelte waren mega komfortabel und einfach auf- und abzubauen. Die Campingausstattung ist sehr üppig, sodass uns auch da nichts gefehlt hat. Der Shuttleservice vom und zum Flughafen hat ebenfalls super geklappt. Also auf ganzer Linie weiterzuempfehlen.

  Go Rent Namibia provide a fantastic service. The car we rented was perfect for our two-week trip around Namibia. Rob and his team were extremely helpful, going the extra mile on two occasions; picking-up our bags from the airport when they didn’t arrive on our flight, and sending back a pair of sunglasses to the UK which I’d left behind.

 Verified Incredible customer service! We were looking for a car very last minute during high season, and these guys saved us with a solid 4x4 with a lot more equipment than we had expected, such as an air compressor, tire puncture kit, flashlight and multitool. Rian and Robert were super nice and helpful during the whole rental period, gave us tips and advice on our route and even included a gas cooker and some pots for free. The 4x4 itself was very clean, in perfect condition and we didn't have any problems with it. I can highly recommend this company and will rent there again if I come back to Namibia. Thanks! :)

  All the staff at GoRent were very friendly and helpful. Christina, Simone and Robert ensured we had all the information and equipment we needed and arranged a Namibian sim and portable WiFi device and airport pick ups and drop offs which were much appreciated. We traveled ~4,000km (~2,500 miles) on gravel, tar and some sand roads to visit several of Namibia’s National Parks (inc. Namib-Nauklauft, Dorob, Etosha and Waterburg). All the camping equipment was great and we had everything we needed.

  A completely magical experience. Namibia is an amazing place to drive around, and I would recommend everyone to do it. However, when you're coming from far away and need to rent a car, it’s always a bit nerve-wracking. You’re not sure about the insurance, the large deposit, etc. The process with GoRent was perfect. When you talk to Robert and Christina, you can tell they have a genuine interest in making everything easy, and straightforward. And much respect for Robert's availability. If there was the slightest issue with the car, we could always contact him. Simon, the driver, provided excellent service in terms of taking us to the bus when we had to continue our journey from Windhoek. Since we had a long wait before the bus departure, he drove us to a café so we could have a coffee and then picked us up again. Would recommend everyone to use GoRent!

We would especially like to thank the owner, Robert, who took excellent care of our entire group. We rented four vehicles in total, two of them for a full four weeks. Robert professionally explained everything we needed to know about using the vehicles safely, and his recommendations for places to visit, restaurants and even campsites were absolutely spot on – 10/10! Throughout our entire trip, communication was excellent. Whenever we needed advice or had any questions or doubts, we could contact them regardless of the day or time and always received help. We would also like to thank Simon for his friendliness, kindness and support – it was a pleasure dealing with him. The vehicles were relatively new Toyota Hilux 4x4s, model years 2024/2025, with around 70,000–80,000 km on the clock. They were extremely well prepared for the trip, with excellent tyres and two spare wheels. Despite driving through some challenging terrain, we never had to use either of them! The camping equipment was more than comprehensive. Each vehicle came with four large storage boxes containing practically everything you might need, so there is really no need to bring much camping equipment of your own. The rooftop tents were equipped with duvets, pillows and blankets. We brought our own sleeping bags simply because we prefer using them, as well as our Jetboil for quickly boiling water – pretty much everything else you need is already provided. We even received a portable power station, which turned out to be extremely useful at campsites without electricity – and yes, there are quite a few of those! To sum up: an excellent rental company, fantastic communication by email before our trip, all our arrangements and requests were handled exactly as agreed – including permission to take the vehicles into Botswana – and, most importantly, great, modern and very well-prepared 4x4s. We would definitely rent from them again and can highly recommend them to anyone planning a self-drive adventure in Namibia and Botswana!

 Verified Very good rental with great amenities Reservation by email very easy with a quote received within 24 hours with Christina. Airport transfer on arrival and Check-out included in the Award of the 4x4 Reservation with Simon. Very friendly driver who provided us with plenty of explanations. New casiment vehicle, with new tires of very good quality. The downs were warm, the pillows and mattresses were very comfortable. The tents in very good condition. All kitchen equipment was supplied kettle, coffee maker, pot, cutting board, sharp knife, salt pepper, crates to store everything. Camping chairs and tables with a stove and gas cartridges as well as the necessary for barbecue, grill, fire lighters. Tea towels and bath towels provided. A pair of binoculars X10 magnification provided as well as a gps with sim card 18 gb for the stay. Rechargeable lamps for the night. Robert provided us with a map with plenty of explanations about the route and the Presentation of the 4x4 with all the equipment. Available by phone throughout the trip. Vehicle under warranty with the possibility of being picked up by Toyota. Small company that we strongly advise. Thank you for making our vacation easy.

  Do not hesitate to book. Awesome service. Robert and his Go Rent team run a high-quality family-run operation for 4x4 rentals in Namibia. My wife and I spent 7 days renting a dual cab Hilux with rooftop tent from Go Rent. The vehicle was modern and spotless, with new and well maintained equipment (including portable WiFi and remote tyre pressure sensors) and thoughtful little details that make life on the trail a bit easier (eg fridge/freezer on separate battery circuit, full cast iron cookware, washing up liquid and brush, fire-lighting kit with head torch). Go Rent is a family business and Robert has a friendly, easygoing, client-centric approach. In a true sense, he takes his clients under his wing and does his best to ensure that they have the best possible experience. He arranged transfers for us from WDH and offered us cold drinks and a leisurely chat about our plans, offering his own ideas and support. Robert took time and care to explain his equipment and to ensure we felt confident and safe. Upon check-out, Robert even offered to let us quickly borrow another vehicle to go to the shops down the road, after we had returned our vehicle for another client.   Amazing experience! Toyota Hilux with roof top tent was reliable throughout the whole 11 day roadtrip. It was also relatively easy to self drive to Deadvlei sand road with this 4x4 car. Tent was really comfortable with option to ventilation if needed during the night. Also waterproof since we had some rain in Naukluft mountains during the night. All you could possibly need in your road trip was included, even wifi and sim card. Would also like to highlight the great service from Robert and Peter. They made sure that our experience would be perfect by offering 24/7 chat assistance if needed. When picking up the car for rental, we were in a bit of hurry to get on the road before sunset, Peter made efficient and fast job to get everything prepared quickly for us. Exrta points from airport transportation service; we returned the car and wanted to stay in Windhoek for another night, they offered to pick us up the next day from hotel to the airport for free.  Verified Just perfect - overdelivered on my expectations Perfect! I rented an almost new Hilux with rooftop for a roundtrip through Namibia. Car was equipped with really everything, staff was extremely friendly and helpful with everything. After the first day there where some unclear issues with the car and they send a new car instantly to meet me on road and exchange it - just to be sure and i would not have to worry. Super professional and customer orientated! I can highly recommend them. The trip was almost 4000km on all sorts of road, never had any issues, everything was perfect.

 Verified Very reliable, professional and friendly service We have found Namibia 4x4 Rentals through a google search and it was the first company to give us a very detailed and informative quote. It was very easy to communicate with them, they explained us everything before our travel, even arranged airport pick-up and a hostel for our first night in Windhoek. Before getting the car, we went through out route with them, and they gave us very useful advice about our route. We rented two tented 4x4 car from them and it had everything we needed, a fridge, all camping equipment, Wi-fi, binoculars, etc. All equipment were quite new, and the tents were very clean&comfortable. The tires took us all the way through without even a puncture (3000 kms in 10 days). Robert checked with us every now and then to see if everything was going fine. We have been extremely satisfied with their service and I recommend Robert's company. I look forward to seeing north of Namibia next time again renting a 4x4 from Robert.

 Verified Unforgettable experience My wife and I had a trip of a lifetime coming to Namibia for 10 days to celebrate our combined 60th birthday. A big part of what made this trip special and memorable was the extraordinary service and hospitality provided by Robert and his team. The vehicle was almost brand new, spotless and extremely comfortable and suited to the very tough terrain of Namibia. Robert not only gave us a local SIM card so that we had mobile coverage but also in-car WiFi which ensured we could use Google maps which we desperately needed to navigate our way around in sometimes very remote areas.   In addition to the quality of the Toyota 4x4 with a roof tent, equipped with more accessories than you could ever imagine, Robbie is an incredible person. After the renting was over, he gave us a car for free for the whole day, so we could get around Windhoek for a day since our flight was canceled. To top it one of his team even drove us to the airport! What more can we say? We have complete trust in him after seeing how he takes care of his customers, whom he turns into friends. We rented a Toyota Hilux with camping equipment for 17 days to explore Namibia and Botsuana. We decided to go with Go Rent Namibia because of their transparent offering without hidden costs and their perfect customer ratings, which really set them apart.  Verified Outstanding and cut above the rest especially with communication and clear hand over 10/10 for Robert and team We decided to use this company for 24 day trip in Namibia and honestly I can’t praise them enough from picking us up to the attention to smaller detail not to even mention all the camping gear that get supplied with the Nissan. Robert was always on the end of the phone if needed even helped us out with some of the pillows on our last night in Windhoek at urban camp as there pillows is like rocks. Pieter was ever so helpful with detailed info on our trip with loads of tips and Christina was extremely helpful to answer all our questions. We are already planning next year’s trip and would not even consider anyone else due to the brilliant customer service and friendship that formed between us.  Verified An unforgettable time that would not have been possible without Go Namibia 4x4 Rentals Hello, i was in Africa over 10 times and my first trip in Namibia was a blast. I really can recommend to explore the land by 4x4 camping car, because everything is designed to see everything with that kind of travelstyle and everything is so easy to organize. Especially with Robert from Go Rent Namibia 4x4. We cam to work in Namibia from Germany, after we had finished, we had 5 days over. No rental company was so spontaneous, helpful, honest and clear as Go rental Namibia. We were contacting via whatsapp and got all information we need in hours. Robert and his crew was packing everything in 30minutes and after a really good and professional briefing about the car and the equipment, we could drive away immediately without any hussle and no loss of time. I never write reviews, but actually without this organisation, we would never have made this wonderful experience to see whole Namibia in 5 days. We drove long distances without any problems. That is not luck, but the company knows exactly what they do, how to prepare and build those car-setups and pack the things you really need on your journey. The equipment and materials used are high quality and designed to last a long time. That's why you feel completely comfortable and safe. But the contact and constant availability are simply invaluable. The personal and really friendly contact with Robert was so good that we are already planning our next Namibia tour with the whole family. Since we once again underestimated the routes in Namibia, it was really tight with the car return and our departure. It was only because of how quickly Robert completed the return and personal transfer to the airport that we were just able to hop on the plane. Thank you very much for everything, a trip like this is often a once-in-a-lifetime event, rely on a good, inexpensive, fair and helpful provider.
